GOALS OF THE INSTITUTE

The Institute on "Culture and Communication in the Pre-Modern Islamic World" has several goals:

(1) To provide twenty-five participants drawn from 2- and 4-year college and university faculties who are not Islamic or global studies specialists the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the role and spread of Islam in the pre-modern world.

(2) To engender among participants a sense of common purpose, inclusive of common questions and methods that may be useful in future teaching and research regardless of field of specialization or interest.

(3) To provide participants with a setting in which they may integrate what they are learning into their teaching, and to assist them in this project.

(4)  To bring together the scholarship on culture and communication among the core regions of Islam, as a means of understanding how Islam developed into a global religio-cultural community.
